This is a heads up: this post was made in a different form at one of the forums that I frequent.

Just like me in my giant diaper, Wednesday rolled around and bounded into the room. Normally, I’ll toss some question about anime out there. However, today let’s shake the tree and see what falls down.

Look! It is a question about Gal-o!

Q: What would you think if you ran into one of the so called ‘Gal-O’ fellas?

According to Jmode:

Onii-kei (“gal-o” as opposed to the female “gal”)
”Gal-o (gya-ru-o; gal – men)” is a name for the male version of the Shibuya gals (tanned skin, dark make-up, light-colored hair, sexy and decorative fashion) of which their fashion (from head to toe) was casual and inexpensive, vivid-colored and decorative. This original gal-o fashion is gradually fading, and rising instead among the gal-men from around 2006 is this new category called “onii-kei”. Onii-kei men retain the gal-ness of the previous style yet present a little more matureness and tidiness by taking in name brand items. Specifically, they have wolf-hair (asymmetry, slightly jagged, slightly long) hairstyle, wear tops that have a fairly wide opening around the neck, and wear leather shoes that have pointy toes. The coordinate is based on black and is hard as well as tight, some consider it to be part of adult rock fashion rather than a part of the more immature gal fashion.

O_o

I had to think about this for a bit. I read about this trend in Otaku USA magazine Many of these guys are fashionistas and also work as male hosts. We Asians are normally not big, intimdating people. This look makes me want to laugh:
You're kidding me.
This is from http://patrickmacias.blogs.com/
Ok. Yeah. I don’t get it. There’s a magazine called ‘Men’s Egg’ that caters to this crowd. I will admit, some of the clothing is cool. BUT, they tend to go over the top with the accessories. There’s also another magazine called ‘Men’s Knuckle’. Where do they get the names for these magazines?

Do women really find this attractive? For whatever reason, all of these men look effeminate. Why would a woman want to go out with a guy who potentially wears more make up than she does.

And what the hell is up with the hair?! Some of those guys have more feathers than Big Bird.

I dunno. Maybe I’m getting old. What do you think?

A few more to get you thinking…

And a few with less tongue: http://community.livejournal.com/shibuyakings/2939.html#cutid1

Let’s face it – most of the time Asian guys are pretty small and thin. A lot of these guys look like you can break them in half. It is a bit ironic that they are trying to look ‘hard’ and tough while having Farrah Fawcett hair. Then again, maybe it really is because I’m old now. Back in the day we used to wear some pretty crazy shit, too. I would love to see these guys as they get older.

Yeah, you’re trendy now. Let’s see you dress like that when you have kids in your minivan in a few years.
